Welcome back fellow stargazers! As we leave behind that wild full moon in Gemini, we come to the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere: Winter Solstice. The moon has moved into Cancer, so as we welcome more light with each coming day, we could also find ourselves deep in our emotions as we process the Autumn season we just went through. It’s officially winter, and as we prepare for getting through the cold nights it’s a lovely time to honor what we’ve been through so far, slow down for a time, reflect, and make plans for the coming months. I like to remind everyone that the astrological new year does not begin until Aries season in March, so if you’re not feeling ready to process the whole year behind us, it’s okay! We still have some months left in this astrological cycle.
With Winter Solstice the Sun changes signs at 8 am (PST), so we leave the fiery and expansive Sagittarius season for the earthy cardinal sign of Capricorn. Tis the season to turn our focus towards our responsibilities, recognize and accept our limitations, and get grounded and feel good in our bodies. Chiron stationed direct in Aries just a few days ago on December 19, which I think will ease things up a lot emotionally for many of us (look to see what house you have in Aries to see what area of life is being most affected by Chiron right now). When Chiron was retrograde we were in a review period of old wounds, and for many of us a lot of difficult things were brought to the surface over the past 5 months. Now that Chiron is direct we can gain some clarity on those wounds and how to move forward and heal, but for the next 10 days or so we are still in the post-shadow period of Chiron retrograde. During this shadow period we are processing everything that came up during this retrograde, and combined with this Cancer moon, don’t be surprised if you are deep in your emotions the next few days.
On December 22nd the North Node enters Taurus, and South Node enters Scorpio. This brings a shift in the collective as we move towards what makes us feel more secure, we lean into and learn trust, break free from old thought patterns and beliefs, and bring more of our consciousness to our daily work. The South Node in Scorpio helps us get more comfortable with the emotions we often don’t want to face, and we begin to embrace the energy of transformation that Scorpio brings.
On December 24 Saturn in Aquarius forms its third and final square with Uranus, now retrograde in Taurus. I think this is a big part of the Revolution (Tower in traditional tarot) card I pulled for this reading’s Message for the Collective. Saturn square Uranus brings a face-off of sorts, one where we take a good look at the institutions and structures that are in place and see how that clashes with our visions for the future. Uranus is a planet of innovation, genius, radical change–we can see a big collective shift with this square, as we realize we are no longer willing to settle for structures that are not serving the people, institutions that are not moving us forward into a better future.
Message for the Collective: The Tower (called Revolution in my favorite deck, Next World Tarot by Cristy Road) comes to break down structures in our lives that are no longer working, ultimately to make room for new growth and the building of better structures. What is no longer working in our lives? It’s likely that with the upcoming square between Saturn and Uranus that we’ll see what needs to come tumbling down so that we can rebuild something more in alignment with what we truly want. The Cold Moon card (from Seasons of the Witch Yule Oracle by Lorriane Anderson & Juliet Diaz) represents the last full moon of the calendar year, and helps shine a light on the unexpected places we can find help and resources. There is more support available than we may have thought, and the more we let go and release the past months, the more energy we have to look around and see what all we have at our fingertips after all. The Bloom card (from Oracle of Mystical Moments by Catrin Weiz-Stein) lets us know that all of the changes and challenges we’ve been facing are building our confidence (even if you don’t quite feel it yet). Connecting and grounding with nature as much as possible will be helpful in the coming weeks…know that all we’ve been working towards and dealing with is feeding and enriching our soil so that we can blossom in a beautiful way. That is not to say that all of the grief and loss we’ve been through the past year was “worth it,” or anything dismissive like that. Just to say that through it all we are not defeated, and we know now a deeper level of strength. Even out of all of the difficulties, we continue to grow and bloom. The card “I need more” (from Love Ascended Oracle by Dezarae Noel-Evans & Destayne Noel) lets us kmow that it’s an important time to reassess. What is no longer working in your life? It’s okay to need more, and it’s okay to let go of the things/situations/people/ways of doing things that are no longer working for you.
Please be sure to read for your Rising sign as well as your Sun sign, as this will give you a more accurate reading. Capricorn & Capricorn Rising (Dec 21 – Jan 19): This winter solstice with the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn, you have an extra boost and emphasis on your 1st house of self, outer personality, self-esteem, and how others see you. Your cards indicate that you’re still processing some grief or loss–with the 5 of Cups something close to your heart has spilled on the floor, but not all is lost. It is time soon to look up and see what cups are still standing, and all that you still have going for you. Reindeer come into your reading to urge you to keep pushing forward. Perhaps it’s a good time to remind yourself of your goals and dreams, and why they are worth fighting for and working towards. This Solstice you are urged to take some time to make your surroundings comfortable and cozy for the winter (or summer if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere), rest as you reflect on your goals and regain stamina for the work ahead. Now is the time to slow down and face anything you’ve been avoiding. Even the really unpleasant truths once faced become easier to handle. Take that time to face the shadows, and rest up because those reindeer are reminding you that your dreams are worth the efforts ahead.
Pisces & Pisces Rising (Feb 18 – Mar 19): This Winter Solstice the Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) shines a light on your 11th house of friendships, groups, and goals. This winter your focus could turn towards your future plans and what you want to accomplish in the coming months, as well as towards your friendships and groups you’re a part of. As we move into a new season, you might want to evaluate how you’re feeling in the groups you belong to, in your friendships, and whether your goals have changed. The Sun asks you to find joy in the little pleasures in life, look for the good parts of your everyday routine, and find ways to have some fun in small ways each day. This is the time of year where the light is slowly coming back in (or slowly fading on the Southern hemisphere), and you can feel some of that sunshine this season. The Solstice card lets you know that it’s time to feel the fire within ignite again, especially if you’ve been recovering from grief, loss, or a rough time. It’s important to retreat and heal, but soon you will begin to feel your glow again. You come out of this period feeling free–know that there are plenty of people who will see and want all that you have to offer. Take care not to engage in dramatic situations and chaotic energy this winter–it won’t serve you well. If you find yourself swept up in some frenzies this season, take time to step away and ground yourself.
Aries & Aries Rising (Mar 20 – Apr 18): This Winter Solstice there is a stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) that falls in your 10th house of career, public life, and authority. As we move into a new season your attention could turn to your career goals, the way you interact with the public, and how you cope with authority (both being in a position of authority, and coping with authority figures in life). You enter this season with the energy of the Queen of Wands–creative, inspired, determined to create what you want, confident and strong. What do you want to create in the months ahead? Is your work in alignment with your inspiration and passion? If you’ve been through a difficult period, the Wreath comes to your door with a message that things won’t stay this hard forever. Your luck is changing, and this turning point has that fiery energy of the Queen of Wands. “All is Connected” further emphasizes that you are approaching a major turning point, and that there is nothing to be afraid of. Let go of fear, and lean into the transformative energy you’re stepping into. For single Aries, there could be an important new soul connection coming in soon. This can also be a card that represents the deepening of an existing connection, a deep recognition of love.
Taurus & Taurus Rising (Apr 19 – May 19): This Winter Solstice a Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) places an emphasis on your 9th house of philosophy, higher learning, spirituality, and world views. While your cards show a lot of change swirling around you, there is also this energy of turning inward for a time. You could find yourself lost in thought, wanting to spend some quiet time thinking or even researching and learning something new. If you have been thinking of taking a class or learning something new, this season supports that. With the shift in seasons the 8 of Wands brings an energy of hope, and the drive and determination you need to propel forward. It’s interesting because the 9th house is as expansive and active as it is introspective and inward, so you have both energies about you this season. Balance the need to retreat inward and reflect on the past few months, and the energy that is building to motivate you and get you excited to get moving. Between the 8 of Wands and the Transformation oracle card, you are definitely in a period big changes. It can feel like there is a lot happening and changing at once, so taking that quiet time to go within will be all the more important so that you can approach the whirlwind refreshed and enthusiastically. There could be some habits or even thought/behavior patterns that need to be faced and changed in the midst of this transformative period.
Gemini & Gemini Rising (May 20 – Jun 20): This Winter Solstice a Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) lights up your 8th house of transformation, death and rebirth, sexuality, and how we learn from our relationships. This season can be a powerful time for you to take a good look at what you are ready to let go of or “die” in your life, and what you want to make room for. The 7 of Pentacles comes into your reading to remind you not to give up before you see the true fruits of your labor. Often with this energy you have reached a point where you are either going to commit to the path that you’re on, or you will scrap it for a new path. Sometimes when we reach the 7 of Pentacles it can seem easier to give up or quit, but the message is to keep at it because the seeds you’ve planted are beginning to grow. In the midst of all this change and transformation, the Remembering oracle card comes to remind you that it’s important to have fun and do things that make you feel free. It’s important to take time to reflect, go inward, and remember times past, but it’s equally important to give yourself a break from the seriousness of things and make your inner child happy. If there’s some communication you’ve been avoiding, or simply not ready to deal with, you’ve got the green light now. Talking things out and communicating clearly could make a positive difference.
Cancer & Cancer Rising (Jun 21 – Jul 21): This Winter Solstice brings a stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) emphasis to your 7th house of partnerships, marriage, and relationships. You can find your focus shifting to close relationships this season, and it’s likely that any issues beneath the surface will come to light this winter. Capricorn energy urges us to be responsible and act in the best interest of all involved when it comes to relationships this season. If things have been particularly difficult (it’s been a rough year for many of us crabbies), know that the Wheel of Fortune has spun into your reading to let you know that things will be changing for the better very soon. When we see the Wheel of Fortune upright, often we’ve been at the bottom of the wheel where things are really hard, and now the wheel is turning…things get easier now. The Mother Mary oracle card comes to your reading with the message that this is a good time to nurture yourself and your loved ones, take good care of yourself. If you believe in a higher power or force/energy, ask for help and guidance while you wait for that wheel to turn. The Journey oracle reminds you to have fun and appreciate the little things along your journey, and to be open to new people along the way who can offer new perspective. It’s okay if you need to retreat into your shell for a bit this winter–use this time to “get your sh*t together,” so to speak. It’s been a helluva year, and it’s perfectly fine to take a break from everything and recalibrate.
Leo & Leo Rising (Jul 22 – Aug 21): This Winter Solstice the Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) lights up your 6th house of sickness and health, daily routines and work. This solstice your attention could turn to your daily habits and routines, and it’s a good time to think about what will bring more balance to your daily life. If there are habits you want to let go of, or new health routines you want to implement, this is the season for making those changes. The 6 of Cups comes to you with the message that you are entering a harmonious, joyful period where you can enjoy time with loved ones and look back on the past with a certain glow. With the nostalgia that comes up, see if there is any useful information from the past that could be helpful in the present. Yule Log comes into your reading to remind you that sometimes we need to clear things away to make room for the new. Take some time this winter to think about what you want to let go of (especially anything holding you back), and what you want to make room for. “Mask On:” Are there ways in which you hide parts of yourself, or project an image of yourself that isn’t completely you? Time to take the mask off, and find the courage to be vulnerable and truly seen.
Virgo & Virgo Rising (Aug 22 – Sept 21): This Winter Solstice a Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) places an emphasis on your 5th house of creativity, self-expression, romance, and fun. This could be a wonderful time to feed your creative side, make time for fun and pleasure, and yes, let a little romance in. Though you’re often focused on work, this month is about play, as the 3 of Cups swims into your reading to let you know this is a brilliant time to get together and connect with loved ones (safely, of course, virtually if necessary). Celebrate how much you’ve survived and accomplished–and I don’t mean productivity/merit-related accomplishments. Look at how much you’ve grown emotionally and intellectually the past few months! Look at all you’ve survived, and celebrate how far you’ve come. Tranquility oracle comes to you with the reminder that true inner peace comes from acceptance and letting go of the need to control things around you. Try to let go of fear and worry surrounding things that are out of your control. Take time this season for mindfulness and just listening to the world around you. When you are out walking, take in all of the sounds and sights that you sometimes miss when you’re rushing. Grounding yourself in nature will help with the letting go that is needed now. It can also be a time where some honest reflection is necessary–are there ways in which you’ve been projecting onto others without realizing it’s really something going on within yourself? How are others a mirror for you, showing you something about yourself you want to change or work on?
Libra & Libra Rising (Sept 22 – Oct 22): This Winter Solstice a Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) turns the focus on your 4th house of home, family, and roots. As the new winter season begins, your attention can turn to your home and living situation, your family, even digging into your ancestry and family history some. There is opportunity this season to resolve family conflicts, and if there are ways in which your home could be more comfortable or suit you better, it’s a great time to begin to tackle that. This winter brings clarity and inspiration, as you feel the fog of the past few weeks lift. If you have been feeling unsure, the way becomes clearer as we step into a new season. Ornaments come into your reading asking you to reflect on the past, on happy memories, on major milestones, family moments. As you look back, think about your current situation, and where your energy is going. Do you want to continue putting energy where you’ve been putting it, or direct it somewhere new? Stranded comes into your reading asking you to take some time to look at how you ended up where you are. Are there ways in which you are afraid to take off for fear of getting stranded or lost again? Remember that failures are necessary steps towards successes, and that when you need to feel you’re on solid ground again, you can always drop anchor and find support. Even if that Ace of Swords clarity hasn’t fully come in yet, know that you are exactly where you’re meant to be, and things are unfolding as they should. Everything is going to be okay, and there will be so much more to be grateful for. Now is a good time to remind yourself of the people, situations, and things you are grateful for in the present moment.
Scorpio & Scorpio Rising (Oct 23 – Nov 21): This Winter Solstice brings a Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) to your 3rd house of writing, communication, thought patterns, short trips, and siblings. You could see some transformation and change in the way you communicate, even the way you think in the coming weeks. What ways have you been holding back in communicating your needs and what makes you feel secure? Are there ways that you’d like to change how you get your thoughts across to others, or patterns you’d like to interrupt? This energy supports change for the better in this area of life. This season teaches you to trust yourself and your intuition–it is time to look within for the answers you seek, and perhaps even time to share some of that wisdom with others. Take extra time for self-care this winter–self-care is more than just taking bubble baths and meditating, it’s also about making sure you have clear boundaries and that they are respected. Self-care is about tending to yourself emotionally and intellectually as well as physically. You approach a “crossroads” of sorts this season–when in doubt, remember that High Priestess urging you to look within and trust your intuition.
Sagittarius & Sagittarius Rising (Nov 22 – Dec 20): This Winter Solstice a Capricorn stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto all in Capricorn) brings a focus to your 2nd house of finances, security, physical resources, desires, and values. Your attention can turn to this area of life, as you take some time to think about what really makes you feel secure, what you truly value, what you really want. This house goes beyond money and physical possessions, and gets to the core of what makes us feel stable and what our true value system is. The 10 of Wands comes in to let you know you are reaching the end of a chapter, completing a cycle, and it’s time to think about what you’re carrying. Are there burdens you’re carrying that are unnecessary or no longer serving you? Are there beliefs you hold that are holding you back? What can you put down to lighten your load, and what do you want to carry with you into the next season? To be sure, some things need to be set down, because you will need the energy for all that you want to build and do. Candle Magic lets you know that if you’ve been putting wishes out to the Universe, they have been received. If not, this is a beautiful time of year to light the dark nights with candlelight and set some intentions. This winter celebrate the little victories, turn your attention to the smaller ways that you’re winning, especially when you feel overwhelmed or overburdened. For some of you, your heart is perhaps far off with loved ones you have been missing. Try to connect despite the distance, and make plans for future visits.
